Groundwater Vulnerability Map For South Africa

This study developed a national groundwater vulnerability map for South Africa using a modified DRASTIC approach called the DRASTIC Specific Vulnerability Index (DSVI), which incorporates an additional anthropogenic impact parameter (land use). The methodology combines multiple hydrogeological and environmental layers—depth to groundwater, recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography (slope), vadose zone impact, hydraulic conductivity, and land use—which are rated and weighted (including use of the Analytical Hierarchy Process) and combined in a GIS environment to produce a final vulnerability surface. The resulting national vulnerability raster is reported at 150 × 150 m spatial resolution. The vulnerability classes are compared against groundwater quality indicators including borehole electrical conductivity (EC) from the National Groundwater Database and a nitrate map, showing broad similarities between higher vulnerability zones and poorer groundwater quality patterns. The published paper emphasises appropriate scale use (regional planning rather than site-specific interpretation) and recommends periodic updating and careful communication to reduce misuse.
