Water Footprint and Resource Management in the Upper Ewaso Ng'iro Basin, Mount Kenya

Researchers estimated blue and green water availability and consumption for various land uses in the Upper Ewaso Ng'iro Basin using water footprint accounting. The study used a pragmatic approach with simple assumptions and available hydrometeorological data to address water scarcity challenges. It was determined that small-scale irrigation consumed the largest portion of blue water, while greenhouse flower production accounted for a relatively small percentage. Evaporative losses from irrigation dams were found to be comparable to greenhouse water consumption. The study also evaluated water productivity and labor opportunities for roses versus maize.
