SCS design flood parameters for southern Africa: 712 climatic zones, soil groups and Curve Numbers

This dataset was harvested from WRC Report TT 31/87, which adapted the United States Soil Conservation Service (SCS) method for estimating storm runoff volume and peak discharge from small catchments in southern Africa. The tables were digitised from a scanned copy of the report and checked against the page images. The core table listed the driver rainfall station for each of 712 climatic zones in southern Africa, with its South African Weather Bureau station number, coordinates, elevation, period and length of record, and mean annual precipitation. A second table gave the hydrological soil group, adjustment factor, typical textural class and interflow potential for about 500 soil series across 41 soil forms of the 1977 binomial classification. The remaining tables gave runoff Curve Numbers by land use, treatment and hydrological condition, Curve Number adjustments for antecedent moisture, antecedent rainfall limits, soil and vegetation parameters for the moisture budget, the four synthetic design rainfall distributions with their regression constants, and the autographic rainfall stations used to regionalise them. Each value carries its source page. Two independent OCR reads were compared, and coordinate and equation-based cross-checks were applied. Cells that remained uncertain were flagged in a verification sheet. Design rainfall maps, the climatic zone map, and the appendices volume holding design runoff depths per zone were not included.
