Water Use Efficiency of Selected Irrigated Crops Determined with Satellite Imagery (WRC TT 602/14)

This dataset comprised field-level data harvested from WRC Report TT 602/14, which assessed the water use and water use efficiency of irrigated sugarcane and maize using satellite imagery (the SEBAL energy-balance model) alongside crop models (CaneSim, SWB and SAPWAT). Data were collected in two study areas: irrigated sugarcane fields around Komatipoort and Malelane in the Mpumalanga lowveld, and irrigated (centre-pivot) maize fields around Douglas in the Northern Cape. Field measurements and model estimates spanned the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 growing seasons. The dataset included: per-field site details and model settings (rooting depth, soil water properties, variety, planting and harvest dates, irrigation system); inferred seasonal irrigation, rainfall and simulated yields per field; simulated and observed cane yield, sucrose yield and sucrose content per field; maize field descriptions; model-validation regression statistics (slope, intercept, R-squared, n) comparing SEBAL, CaneSim, SWB and SAPWAT estimates against measured canopy cover, evapotranspiration, biomass and yield; seasonal evapotranspiration, biomass and water-use-efficiency statistics; energy-balance regression statistics for both study sites; and a per-field review of irrigation practices. Values were extracted directly from the report tables and appendices and verified against the source pages. This metadata record describes the harvested tabular data compiled from the published report.
